| Anyone ever able to FULLY get off of methadone? My wife started taking methadone for opiate withdrawl in febuary. I wasnt keen on the idea but she was breaking the law to get her vicodens. Now I have a methadone bill of $380 a month and a wife who is still ****** up - Has a low libido - and is gaining ton of weight - but is finally not breaking the law. Any suggestions? |
| Edit - I just had to add that while the guy above me's examples aren't rare I don't think they're very common so long as methadone is the only mind altering drug the person is taking or if they're not taking too much. Someone on an appropriate dose of methadone. If it makes someone sleep all day they are probably on too much although less often this can supposedly be caused by being on too little. Someone stabilized on methadone taking no other mind altering drugs get absolutely no high. They usually get reduced cravings and feel normal and that's it. Methadone has a very bad stigma as people getting a legal high. This isn't the case at ALL. You could never tell if someone was on methadone. The stereotypical methadone user drooling on themselves all day are the ones taking other drugs, especially benzos. If they take benzos WITH their methadone then they are going to catch a buzz (and its very dangerous). Or they're on a very high dose in which case they probably sleep all day. As he says in his case he was on 200mg which is too most for I'd guesstimate 90 + % of people. I also don't know about some of the other stuff like taking it for 4 days and catching a habit if you've never had one before. Catching a dependent habit takes a while the first time around getting situated on opiates/opiods. Some people can use daily for up to a month and not catch one the very first time. Although more realistically is probably around the 2 week mark. Once you've had a previous habit then sure it could take as little as 2 days but everyones different. I guess its a little irrelevant to your Q anyways though. Anyways back to the answer. The law makes it difficult. In actuality methadone is the hardest of all opiates/opioids to detox from, but guess what? As you said, it's legal! Corporate profit. Ideally it's better to detox off something fast acting it may be initially more intense but it's over quick. Methadone withdraw can last for a full month compared to a week max for something short acting. It just drags on and on and you aren't sleeping in detox. So while methadone isn't usually as extreme a detox as something like heroin although high doses can be close the fact that it just drags on and on makes it FAR worse than any other withdrawal. Those time frames are with long term withdrawal effects not included...It's tough. The bottom line is either way she has to WANT to come off first and foremost. That's not up to you or even really up to her. You can't really want to come off if you don't want to come off, ya know. In reality getting on methadone for a hydrocodone habit is like using a hammer to treat a headache. Really bad decision typically, but once again it comes back to legality. Legally it's not a bad move but addiction-wise oh boy. Even if you wean it has to be incredibly slow once she gets to the point where it becomes uncomfortable. She may be able to detox quite quick to start but once she hits the thresh-hold where WD kicks in it has to go really slow. Yes people have weaned off methadone. Ideally it'd be better to be in a controlled situation where she could take hydros and wean off of them if it were possible if they even work after being on methadone. There's really not much that can be said. If you have more specifics Q's I could help more but not much else to say. It's possible but it's going to take a looong time. Don't stress her out about going too fast. As much as it sucks thats the WORST thing you can do especially if she is in mild detoxes. Opiate withdraw, particularly methadone withdrawal is the most HORRIBLY EVIL SADISTIC cruel thing she will ever go through, so be supportive. It's an unimaginable hell. Rushing her off might seem like a good idea but it's the worst thing you can do. If you really want to help you have to have honest open communication without giving her crap for not doing it your way or the highway. There's no real answer. Really shouldn't have gotten on it for hydros but thats in retrospect. Some people really need to (arguably) be on this for life, but it doesn't sound like she is likely one of them. These are people who naturally produce very small amounts of endorphins or as (is debated) people who have used or abused opiates for a long period have permanently damaged their brains ability to produce endorphins is sufficient quantities to live a normal life. Even after a detox the months following if not up to a year or so will be very hard, the brains endorphin system has to get rolling on its own again. Initially sleep will be scarce and slowly get back to normal. Sadly enough there are many other options that in most cases would be much better and easier to detox people off of opiates but our drug laws are designed for profit and not compassion. If she doesn't truly want to quit then a forced detox at this point will only do harm. If she is time for a slow detox. However, depending on how much shes on (most likely shes on way too much, esp if her history is just hydros) so she can probably jump quite a bit initially (forget babystepping to start) once she finds the level where detox kicks in she can start slowly reducing at something like 5% per WEEK. Something very important to keep in mind when detoxing off of done is to keep in mind the HALF-LIFE and what the methadone levels are in the bloodstream on average go by that instead of the dose when figuring out how much to drop (typically half-life is about 24 hours). That's a very good tip. Also, is she has take-homes or can talk her clinic into split dosing that's better for detoxing because it keeps the level of methadone more even. This way the body won't drop to as low an amount as if you dosed once a day and this will allow you to take less. It should also make detoxing easier. Keep in mind how she feels mentally too. Even if she's not physically detolxing she may get to a point where cravings hit but physical symptoms don't. Don't necessarily listen to what the clinic says is best for detoxing or when she should detox. If you haven't realized it almost all clinics are a complete joke. Uneducated or greedy. She may need to be on methadone for a while, especially if its helping her with cravings that she can't otherwise control. Sometimes people just need time. She isn't getting any high off of methadone as is widely believed, she's just feeling OK. If it controls her craving for a good while then eventually she may think less and less of using and then be ready for a detox. Regardless of what she does she should wean at least a good amount if not completely. Either way it will be hell but cold turkey, especially methadone, would be complete insanity.
